The Men behind the BATTLE of Midway...5 STARS better than I expected.
PLOT: unnamed Aircraft Carrier on a secret mission just before Midway. 1942~ This has a first rate CAST~ named "Aircraft Carrier X " for this movie the plot starts as a "mission" to convince the Japanese WE had more "flat tops" than we actually had and they used "X" (CARRIER name for this movie) to be "spotted" in many locations from the Marianna Islands to the Solomon Islands with order to NOT fight when the enemy is spotted or attacks. The "scheme" is two fold...to convince the enemy we are not willing to fight and to make them believe one X is several Carriers...Carrier X has Don Amaeche as the man who directs the pilots to the air. Pilots Dana Andrews, Harry Morgan and William Eythe are outstanding as the pilots to have to avoid the enemy. Eythe is called Oscar who is an Oscar winning ... The first hour sets up the crew and the last 40 minutes is the actual turning point where "X" becomes part of the battle of Midway. X is very YORKTOWN like in this movie. This is very good blend of action and excellent plot. One of the best scenes is the "actual" battle of Midway through the loud speaker of the carrier and we see just about every crew member 'listing" to the action of the air battle. Directed by Henry Hathaway (the HOUSE on 92nd Street.....) and True Grit....gives one of the better movies most of us have never seen this one...I give it 5 STARS all the way...good movie*** look for Reed Hadley in person who was often the "narrator" in several movies including The House on 92nd Street and T Men and Walk a Crooked Mile.

The movie was made i 1944 during the Second World War, and it was not made to glorify war. It is about those caught up in the wartime emotions and experiences. It is not about guts and glory, like so many movies about combat. It is about care, expressed bravado, and deep emotions of those experiencing naval combat in the Pacific. Carefully watch those scenes of silent visual sentimentality, expressed bravado, and of loss and desperation. These emotions so superbly captured by the director Henry Hathaway. The film has more human value than those modern movies made today for visual excitement and just selling tickets. Scenes to watch are (a.) actor Henry Morgan as a torpedo bomber pilot expressing his bravado in how he’s going to destroy the enemy and what happens to him later when he ... Scenes to watch are (a.) actor Henry Morgan as a torpedo bomber pilot expressing his bravado in how he’s going to destroy the enemy and what happens to him later when he disobeys orders, (b.) the air battle being heard on the carrier intercom system by carrier servicemen – especially when one pilot and his crew is hit and having to crash into the sea, (c.) the lone three man torpedo bomber searching for the carrier in foul low visibility weather conditions – especially watch the face of the young gunner telling the pilot and other crewman that he just made 17 years old and then he looks down to see the older crewman in the lower part of the plane, and (d.) the scene near the end of the movie where one pilot starts to accuse the flight instructor of neglect in not having care to signal the lone lost torpedo bomber trying to find the carrier. These scenes are those of the many scenes to carefully watch and appreciate about wartime experiences. As a kid in Chicago I saw this movie just thinking it didn’t show enough exciting action, and never understood the true value of the movie. As an older adult, I have more mature insight on the value of this movie. I hope you watch it and in time will develop similar thoughts about the value of the film. The naval Avenger three-man torpedo bombers in the movie are the same as President George H.W. Bush piloted during the war in the Pacific.
